Color Grading and Valuation

Color and Market Value

Blue topaz: 99% is color-modified by irradiation (such as London Blue and Swiss Blue). Natural blue topaz is only produced in small quantities in Brazil and costs over 10 times more than color-modified topaz.

Clarity and Cut

Topaz often contains inclusions, and clarity is graded from flawless (FI) to heavily included (EI). High-quality gemstones require high transparency and minimal inclusions, and are often cut in emerald or round brilliant shapes to maximize fire.

Weight and Price

Price increases exponentially with carat weight. 2025 market data shows:
Brazilian Imperial Topaz, irradiated London Blue Topaz, and natural blue topaz.
